Common Dental Emergencies: How to Get the Right Help
Practical information to help you prepare questions and understand your next step.

Start With a Phone Call
Call about severe tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth, or a lost restoration. Describe when it started, whether there was an injury, and any fever or swelling. Call before coming in so the team can check availability.
Know When Medical Help Comes First
Trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious facial injury requires emergency medical help rather than waiting for a dental callback.
Protect the Tooth Until You Are Seen
Keep tooth fragments or a lost crown to bring to the visit, and avoid chewing on a painful or damaged area. For a knocked out adult tooth, seek immediate dental care and keep the tooth moist. Do not replant a baby tooth.
Understand the Visit
The examination determines whether repair, a crown, root canal treatment, extraction, or referral is appropriate. Same day treatment depends on your needs and available time. For after hours concerns, leave a message on the office emergency line for a callback.
Your Next Step
Your examination helps identify the right next step for your teeth and gums.
